Run for the Green Half and Magnificent Mile
One weekend, two races! Two very different distances.
Last weekend, I had the honor of competing in two races for two great causes. The first race on Saturday was the Davidson Run for the Green for land conservation and the second on Sunday was the Raleigh Magnificent Mile race to raise funds for motor neuron diseases.
Finished the truly challenging half course in 1:22:40 and then the mile on Sunday in 5:19. Here are some pictures from the Magnificent Mile. (Photos by Carolina Snapshot)
At the finish line of the Mag Mile, a man on a bicycle came over and placed a heart sticker on my race number; he said, "This is because you showed heart."
It meant a great deal to me, a simple reminder of why this sport is so great - we put our hearts into it, we put our all into it.

Changing of Seasons
It happened.
Finally.
I felt it!
....
A hint! Just a hint of Fall in the air! It's in the breeze, ever so slight & mostly hidden, but its quick crisp touch to my skin not only lifts energy into my legs but into my spirit! There's the deep smell of the grass that has been smothered by humidity for so long and now it's breaking wide open into the air. Trees can stretch out their limbs and welcome the wisp of cool calming their greens into yellows, oranges, reds, and browns - and then gift us with colorful creations floating and flying through the air around us only to settle into some shape, some pattern on the ground.
It is the beginning of fall. Races to be run, victories big and small to come.
Recently, I was asked "Do you think you are successful? If so or if not, why?" It really made me stop and think. Successful? Well, how on earth do you define THAT! Where are Kant, Confucius, Descartes, Plato, and Aristotle when you need them? My brain can't handle this piece of pensive pie!
Without failing at impressing with my intelligence or succeeding at baffling with my bull...well you know... I attempted to circumnavigate the question - and I do think it is important to stop and consider this; what does define 'successful'?
Personally, and through running, I have learned that you can fail many times along the way, but you can be successful in a journey. On the other hand, I can succeed in many instances, but ultimately fail at the important goal. So which one makes me successful? Which makes any of us successful?
Ultimately, I think it comes down to something much bigger than myself and something deeply rooted down inside - which is that small voice and spirit that is suddenly lifted this time of year - and it's uniquely mine. Successes and being successful can only be uniquely and deterministically defined by the individual alone; at the end of the day, I realize that the whole world could call me a success or a failure, sometimes successful or always failing, but - and I very well could be wrong - I believe that my success or successful-ness is defined deep down inside by me alone and that determines my definition of 'successful' and that determines if I succeed in my goals and dreams.
